Federal Trade Commission
In 1984 the F.T.C. enacted a set of regulations covering the funeral industry. You have a right to receive a general price list of all services that the funeral home can provide. The funeral home should also have additional lists or their equivalent for caskets, urns, vaults and other related funeral merchandise.

State Board of Funeral Directors
The Pennsylvania State Board has defined rules regarding pre-arrangement and their structure. Each funeral home must follow this structure. However, some firms have found ways to skirt many of these regulations.

Right to Cancel
If you believe that your current preplan program suffers form one or all of these symptoms, you have a right as a consumer to cancel. You should be able to cancel a contract without contingency, penalty or expense by simply writing a letter to the funeral home or trustee. If you have problems in recovering moneys, you should immediately contact the state board of funeral directors.

Shop around
Investing in a preplan is a major purchase. You would never buy a home, car or similar purchase without first becoming educated. Becoming a "Smart Consumer" will provide you with greater piece of mind.
